5 Steps to Pin-Up Perfect Hair

By Kristie-Lee Clifford

If you’re going to a party or you just want to stand out, something as simple as your hair can make all the difference.

I learnt these little tricks after hours of fidgeting in front of the bathroom mirror. Luckily for you, my pain and suffering means I’ve developed the perfect formula for a rockin' pin-up hairdo.

1) Don’t wash your hair

No that’s not a typo – you want your hair to be a little dirty so that everything holds in place. Day two or three after your wash usually work well.

Besides, what’s worse than putting bucket-loads of hairspray into freshly washed hair?

2) Tease it up

Section off your hair using some hair clips or hair ties. Starting at the back, tease up the layers and hairspray as you go.

Then take a brush and go over the outer layer to smooth out any fly-a-ways. Don’t worry about how big it looks – it will drop! While you may look like Amy Winehouse now, you won’t in 15 minutes.

3) Twirl it

Grab a small section of hair roughly at the centre of your hairline. Tease the base of the section so it’s nice and thick.

Gently brush the outside. Once that’s done, wrap the hair once around three fingers and hold it to your scalp.

Place two or three bobby pins in the hair coming from either direction. Then hairspray it like it’s a cockroach you’re trying to kill with bug spray!

4) Put it in a ponytail

Very carefully grab your hair and the tail end of your twirl and slip it into a high pony. Secure it with a hair tie and section off your ponytail.

5) Curl it

The final step helps add some extra glam to your look. I like to curl my ponytail so it looks thick and bouncy. I curl last so I don’t have to worry about ruining them when I’m putting my hair into the ponytail.

Just curl the bottoms of your sections. Curling from the top often leaves you with fly-a-ways.

Once your curls are done you’ll need a final layer of hairspray. Add a bright bow around your ponytail and you’ll have pin-up perfect hair for any occasion!
