5 things Mean Girls taught me about high school

10 years on and still so much to

learn from the 'fetchest' of films!

Mean Girls is a one of a kind movie. It’s a cult flick for girls of our generation. To celebrate its 10th anniversary we thought it would be fun to reflect on what Mean Girls taught us about high school and growing up as part of Generation Y

1) If you try to social climb you’ll lose all of your real friends.

Popularity can’t replace true friendship, no matter how many group selfies you take! A real friend is there when you need them to tell you how it is!

2) Other girls will date your ex-boyfriend, even if it goes against the rules of feminism.

High school is an incestuous environment, with the same group of people stuck together for 6 years. People are bound to date each others ex-boyfriends and girlfriends. You can’t dibs a person for the remainder of school just because you dated them once and almost lost your virginity to them!

3) Just because you’re popular it doesn’t mean everyone likes you.

I’m pretty sure most people were scared of Regina George. They let her walk all over them because, let’s face it, she was kind of intimidating and very good at manipulating. Those things don’t equate to a likeable person.

4) Undermining other people doesn’t make you any better, even if she has a monobrow and a hang tooth.

Making fun of the girl who is really good at maths doesn’t make you any smarter. It’s unnecessary, so don’t do it. She may be fugly but you don’t need to make her feel like shit too!

5) School will always have cliques or groups. If you’re being yourself and having fun with your friends, it doesn’t matter if you’re in the plastics or the mathletes.

Be yourself, hang out with the people who like you for you and forget about everyone else. The second you stop trying to impress everyone is the second you realise high school isn’t that bad.

Mean Girls may be ten years old, but its lessons are timeless! They’ve served me well out of high school too! Who’d have thought this chick flick would have been so fetch a decade later?
