For the love of Green tea

“When tea becomes ritual, it takes its place at the heart of our ability to see greatness in small things...”

(Muriel Barbery, The Elegance of the Hedgehog)

My earliest childhood memories are laced with the sweet smell and subtle taste of tea. From drinking a cup of Earl Grey around Grandma’s Kitchen Table, Mum prescribing Green Tea for every ache and pain to laughing over a “cuppa” with friends. This humble yet highly therapeutic drink has been a loyal friend and superhero.

In a recent endeavour in a second hand bookshop, I came across a small, old book, dedicated to green tea. Green Tea  by Peter Oppliger had everything from the history of this calming drink to expert tips in brewing and the amazing health benefits. So, in the spirit of tea, let me share a metaphoric “cuppa” of knowledge with you all.

Where did this magical beverage come from?

The earliest knowledge of tea traces back to Ancient China where remedial usage of tea was first written. Tea has always had a strong connection to Eastern spirituality and meditation, including the Buddhist legend that the first tea shrubs were sent to earth as a symbol of eternal vengeance.

Chinese and Indian cultures refer to green tea as withholding a form of light energy named ‘Chi. This healing energy is present in a variety of natural elements (think of it as a real superfood) and is asserted, by spiritualists and scientists, to be partially responsible for healing properties found in tea. This energy leaves the tea sipper feeling relaxed, radiant and calm, giving you time to meditate on everyday life.

Is green tea good for you?

Green tea is unfermented and non-oxidised, which means it is highly pure. The natural active ingredients from the tea plant are preserved holistically. Basically, all the goodies given to the plant from the earth are simply dried with the leaves and presented in your cup. Natural alkaloid caffeine in the tea leaves dissolves with hot water, leaving a drink full of antioxidants.

Not only does green tea soothe the senses, its great for you physically too.

Enriched with calcium, essential oils, vitamin c, and aromatic substances, green tea helps:

  • Promote blood circulation, skin regeneration and mental/physical performance,

  • Balances chemical levels, enhancing positivity and enthusiasm and fighting depressive moods and;

  • Detoxes, aiding weight loss.

My tips and tricks for using this natural bad boy?

  • Always brew at 80°C and never leave the tea in for more than 3 minutes to avoid a bitter taste.

  • Drink after meals to aid digestion and metabolism.

  • Try drinking when studying  as it keeps you calm.

  • Drink before bed as it relaxes the body and mind, creating a suitable state for sleep.

  • Replace the morning coffee with green tea; the natural high you get will soon replace the coffee buzz!
