Decoding Coffee: A Whole Lot of Macchiato

What does all this coffee mumbo jumbo mean?

The Macchiato

Just the way it rolls off your tongue you know the only people who order it are of Italian origin or consider themselves to be sophisticated and oh-so worldly.

This shot of espresso topped with a capful of milk and a dollop of foam isn’t for newbies. The rich flavour of the coffee is only slightly mellowed by the milk. It’s the kind of coffee you order after a long day of working for the Don.

The Espresso

Espresso, not expresso for God’s sake! For the ultimate hit of caffeine, shot back an espresso and you’ll be raring to go. It’s the drink of choice for the caffeine junkie.

You have to either be French or just really like the taste of coffee to order one of these bad boys. Personally I can’t drink an espresso without three teaspoons of sugar.

The Mocha

Everyone likes a mocha, it’s the coffee you have when you don’t like coffee. I think of mochas as a gateway drug, they lure you in with their delicious chocolatey taste and promise of caffeine and before you know it you’re hooked.

Sweet sweet mochas with their combination of chocolate and coffee just go

down so well. They may be perfect for a winter’s day but they’re as addictive

as crack cocaine.

The Cappuccino

To me a cappuccino is a mum drink, I’d say that’s just because my mum drank

cappuccinos all through the 90s.

This frothy cup of coffee is a real crowd pleaser complete with chocolate powder

on top! If your graduating from the mocha, you can’t really go wrong with the safe

and secure cappuccino.

The Latte

A latte is an easy choice, your typical shot of espresso with the perfect amount of milk and just the right amount of head.

You may have guessed this is my drink of choice, but in my time in hospitality I noticed it’s also one of the most frequently ordered coffees. Lattes are kind of like the everyman, they’re don’t really stand out but they make the world go round.

The Flat White

A shot of espresso topped with flat milk, the flat white is the no frills option when it comes to coffee.

Popular with the oldies, flat whites do the trick just like every other coffee.

The Long Black

Plain and simple, the long black is just a shot of espresso topped with hot water. This seems like the drink of choice for our lactose intolerant friends.

Long blacks are also popular with older folk and those who enjoy the taste of coffee but aren’t quite as gung-ho as espresso drinkers.

The Last Resort

Instant coffee, need I say more? Once you’ve had a real coffee you’ll never look at the instant stuff the same way again.

Who can honestly say they enjoy the taste of anus in the morning, I’d rather go without – if it weren’t for my slight caffeine addiction.

People say us Melbournians are coffee snobs and maybe they’re right, but let’s face it, we really do have some of the best coffee in the world.

When it comes to deciding which coffee is for you, that’s where things can get tough. It honestly can seem like some kind of competition of who can order the most complicated coffee.

So sit back grab your extra hot, half strength, decaf soy latte and hopefully this can shed some light on the different types of coffee on offer in Melbourne cafés.
